Race One in Detroit Ends Early for Newgarden

Race One of the Indy Dual in Detroit looked to be smooth sailing for Sarah Fisher Hartman Racing (SFHR) before Josef Newgarden’s day ended early on Lap 37 when he made contact with the wall in Turn 7.

Newgarden was credited with 20th place after completing 36 of 70 laps on the 13-turn, 2.35-mile street circuit at Belle Isle.

“I feel bad for everyone on our team,” Newgarden said. “They’ve done a great job this weekend, especially coming off of Indy with the long stretch that they’ve had. The crew has been working flat out.”

Newgarden started 14th on Belle Isle’s street circuit and drove his way to fifth place before the incident, which damaged his front wing and left front suspension.

“It’s my fault; I messed up,” Newgarden said. “I locked up the rear brakes, and I couldn’t catch the (car) into the corner. It caught me off guard. I didn’t lock up before that, and then all the sudden I got a big one from the rear side, and I was sliding all the way through the corner.

“It’s a silly mistake that cost us today. We had a great car, and we were doing a great job. We didn’t really have any complications, so days like that you want to finish strong and do a good job overall.”

Will Power of Team Penske won the race.

Newgarden’s No. 67 SFHR Dallara/Honda/Firestone car will have a shot at redemption in Race 2 of the dual weekend Sunday, June 1.

“I hope we have a good day tomorrow,” Newgarden said. “We get another chance to qualify and to race so I know we will have a great car again, and I will do my best out there for the team.”

The second Indy Dual in Detroit race will air live on ABC at 3:30 p.m. (ET) Sunday. Newgarden will qualify the No. 67 car for the second race at 10 a.m. (ET).
